Chi-Chi cleans the dishes while Krillin wakes up and leaves Goku's house. While he is driving back to the Kame House, he can't understand why he was unable to tell Chi-Chi about Gohan and Goku's misfortune. When he gets back, Bulma and Master Roshi are also mad at him for not telling her and for not getting Goku's Dragon Balls. After another night of hard work, Bulma is finally able to make the scouter display fighting forces in numerical format. She tries to wake up Krillin and Master Roshi and ultimately has to fire a machine gun at them to wake them up. She reads Master Roshi's power at 139, Krillin's power at 206, and the turtle's power at .001.

Just then, Yajirobe arrives at the Kame House and tells Krillin to round up Yamcha, Tien and Chiaotzu to be trained by Kami in preparation for the Saiyans. Yajirobe also relays the message to not wish Goku back for a whole year. As Yajirobe leaves, another plane approaches in the distance, but as it draws nearer, we can see it's Chi-Chi and Ox-King. When they land, Chi-Chi wants to see Goku and Gohan, so Master Roshi tells her the entire story. Upon hearing this, Chi-Chi faints

Back in the desert, Gohan sees a stampede of dinosaurs run by and asks them for assistance in getting off of the pillar. Of course, they can't hear him and run off. Piccolo, who had been watching from a distance, says that training Gohan is a lost cause. The scene switches to night, where the noise a squirrel makes wakes up Gohan. Gohan tries to pick up the squirrel, but it runs into a hole in a upwardly protruding land formation coming out of the pillar. Gohan reaches in and is bitten. Gohan notices that he has a shadow, and looks at the full moon for the first time.

Gohan transforms into and Oozaru Ape and starts rampaging around the desert, destroying everything in his path. Piccolo sees him transform and remembers when Raditz said that the Saiyans main power source is their tails, and how they transform in the light of a full moon. Piccolo destroys the moon, causing Gohan to transform back into his human form. Piccolo removes his tail, and gives him a uniform like Goku's, and a sword. Piccolo flies off leaving Gohan alone once again.

Gohan bursts through Raditz's space capsule, shocking everyone. Goku tells Gohan to run away, but Gohan is too angry to make sense of anything. Raditz reads Gohan's fighting power at 1307, and says that his scouter is malfunctioning. Suddenly, Gohan charges at Raditz and hits him dead-on in the middle of his chest, leaving him wounded. Gohan runs to his father's side as Raditz staggers to his feet. Goku pleads with Gohan to run, but now he is too scared to run. Raditz reads Gohan's power again, and it has substantially dropped to one, since Gohan can't control his power, it changes with emotion. Raditz smacks Gohan across the head, knocking him a few meters away.

Raditz approaches Gohan and begins to gather energy for a Ki blast. Raditz murmurs that Gohan was the first person to wound him as badly as he did. As Raditz raises his arm for the final blow, Goku wraps himself around Raditz, preventing the attack. He tells Piccolo to try the Special Beam Cannon, even if it means his death. Piccolo, without hesitation, begins to gather energy for another Special Beam Cannon.

Raditz pleads with his brother to reconsider what he is doing, but Goku only holds on tighter. Piccolo finally gathers enough energy for the technique, and fires it at Raditz. The beam goes directly through Raditz, and directly through Goku. The two fall to the ground mortally wounded. Piccolo approaches Raditz who murmurs that Goku foolishly sacrificed his life. Piccolo tells Raditz about the Dragon Balls and the wish they grant, and Raditz relays the message to his two partners in deep space. Raditz tells them that these two are far stronger than him, and that they will arrive in one year. Raditz laughs maniacally, and Piccolo finally puts him out of his misery.

In deep space, Raditz's partners hear of the Dragon Balls and the wish they grant. The shorter of the two, who we later know as Vegeta, says that they are going to wish for eternal life, so they load their space capsule and head for earth. Meanwhile, Bulma, Master Roshi, and Krillin arrive just in time to bid Goku farewell. Goku's body vanishes at the hands of Roshi, while everyone is left to mourn his death and prepare for the approaching threat.

After being defeated in battle by Raditz with only one punch and having his son kidnapped Goku can do nothing but awe at Raditz's awesome power and think of how to get his son back.Then,suddenly, an unexpected figure offers Goku help. Piccolo was still sore about his previous encounter with Raditz. Though Master Roshi has his doubts Goku accepts Piccolo's hand and heads off to find Raditz who was seen eating an animals flesh. Suddenly his scouter indicates a very high power of over 700. He turns around to find that it's coming from his space-pod. Inside was Gohan, trapped and scared. Raditz just brushes it off saying that his scouter probably isn't working. But then he reads two lower levels of around 350 each coming his way and Goku and Piccolo soon arrive. Raditz is shocked to see his scouter working properly and wonders if the previous power reading he got was true too. But before he can ponder on it much the battle between Goku and his brother begins. Is there any chance for our hero?
